Your Cat's Lazy Habits May Be Causing Skin Cancer!

It seems as though cat’s have the life! They get to sleep all day; play every once in a while; and eat when they want to. As someone who has children, wakes up every morning- usually before the sun rises, works all day and then tends to the kids at night, I wish I could have the lifestyle of a cat sometimes! I'm sure many of you can relate.

But, cats have some similar concerns that humans do! We, as humans, have to worry about sun damage to our skin, which can result in skin cancer if we don't take the proper precautions. Well, cat's can also get skin cancer when lying in the sun for long periods of time, just like humans!

The UVA rays that pass through the windows can penetrate deep into the cat’s skin, causing skin cancer, usually squamous cell carcinoma (readingeagle.com). The regions of the body that can be harmed the most are the ears, nose or places where the hair is thin.

So, while it looks like your cat is enjoying his or her's lazy afternoon, they may be causing more harm then relaxation to their skin.

Putting shades up to protect your cat from getting this type of skin cancer is a good idea. Also, you could apply ultraviolet-blocking film to the window, which will stop the harmful UVA rays from penetrating the skin, but will keep the heat flowing through the windows to warm your feline friend.

Now your pet can go back to the good-old-days without having to be concerned about damaging their skin and health.

H3N8, aka Dog Influenza, Is Back!

The dog influenza virus, H3N8, has moved into the state of Ohio recently, and owners are encouraged to have their dogs vaccinated.

The flu-vaccine is recommended for dogs who are most likely to be exposed to the highly contagious virus -- those that frequent dog parks, attend dog daycare centers, boarding kennels, training facilities, veterinary clinics, and/or dog shows and groomers (blog.cleveland.com).

Dogs initially receive two injections under the skin at least two weeks apart, then one dose every year. The vaccination was invented in 2009.

Although the vaccination is not 100 percent effective, the chance of your dog getting the canine virus is less likely if you get the shot than if you don't elect to. Symptoms may include coughing, sneezing, fever and runny nose.

H3N8 does not affect people, and most dogs fully recover on their own within two weeks, though some develop pneumonia that requires treatment, especially older dogs and puppies, said veterinarian Bob Litkovitz at Gateway Animal Clinic in Cleveland (blog.cleveland.com).

Litkovitz also added that dogs that stay home all day and take long walks in the neighborhood aren't likely to get the H3N8 virus.

Picture this – you are calling for your pet, looking all over the house, under laundry piles- and they are nowhere to be found. You realize that the back door was slightly open and that empty feeling starts to settle inside your stomach. My pet is gone! How could I have done this?

There is a way that your pet can be easily found, and that is by installing a microchip in the scruff of their neck. These chips work like an electronic dog tag. Pet owner’s information can be programmed with the chip manufacturer and when the animal is scanned, the phone number will show up. This makes it easier to have your pet returned to you safely.

“It’s not a LoJack or GPS,” Amber Lutz, a veterinary Tech at the Veterinary Medical Center in Howell said, so when an animal does wander away from home the microchip won’t help you locate it. What the microchip does is help animal shelters and vets find you when your pet is brought to them (livingstondaily.com).

Many times, the chip is implanted inside the pet when they are under anesthesia for spaying or neutering, so they don’t feel it very much. It can be used in all types of animals, including horses, cows and exotic birds.

Warning Signs For Feline Cancer

Some cat owners worry their pets will show signs indicating they are not feeling well. Dogs show signs of illness in different ways, but differences in your cat's appetite, weight loss and/or different reactions around the house are all causes for concern, especially for feline cancer.

If a cat has cancer, one of the first warning signs is diarrhea. Felines should have solid, well formed stool in their litter boxes. Gastrointestinal lymphosarcoma is a common cancer that is seen in feline patients. Often the first symptom of this cancer is diarrhea (palmbeachpost.com). If you see signs of diarrhea, take your cat to the Bregman Vet Group immediately and report the symptoms to your vet.

Another sign of illness in cats is loss of appetite. Most cats eat once or twice a day. If you notice variations in how much and how many times they eat a day, address it with your vet.

Cats can also get cancer in their mouths. If you notice a decreased appetite or if your cat is chewing on one side of their mouth, there could be something wrong. Pet owners can use one or two ways to de-stress their pets: natural remedies or environmental enrichment.

When it comes to natural remedies, pet owners can use something called pheromones, which is a secreted chemical factor that triggers a social response in members of a certain species.

For example, if your cat needs to spend the night in a pet hospital, Dr. Ann Hohenhaus, DVM, DACVIM, will give them a cardboard box in their cage for hiding. She will spray the box with Feliway, a feline pheromone, which signals comfort and reassurance to the cat (webmd.com).

For dogs, a pheromone called DAP can be put on a bandana or an article of clothing that a dog wears. This will help calm their fears when traveling or going for a vet visit.

As for environmental remedies, set up a space where your pet can look out a window, whether it be clearing way near a sliding door or a ledge that sits behind your bay windows. Cats love to perch and look beyond the normal sites of their own homes.

Research shows that pets help you lower your blood pressure and cholesterol. Research has also shown that people with heart disease have better survival rates if they interact with pets (Washingtonian.com).

Sandra Barker, director of the Center for Humna-Animal Interaction at Virginia Commonwealth University, says "although more research is needed, pets have a physiological effect on people."

“The interaction is mutually beneficial,” Barker says, referring to research indicating that people and animals are less stressed out when they play together and that they experience increased levels of oxytocin, a hormone that creates feelings of love and attachment (Washingtonian.com).

Dental X-Rays May Help Bad Breath in Cats

Many times, we've heard of the common "bad breath" in dog's issue. Now, cat's are becoming known for the same problem...

According to Dr. John, bad breath can be a sign of bad oral health affecting the teeth or gums, but animals can also have gum disease without having bad breath.

"Frequent brushing helps reduce the incidence of decay and problems, but it is not a panacea," said Dr. John (Boston Herald). He continued, "Veterinary medicine continues to become far more sophisticated and the ability to do dental X-rays is rapidly becoming the right thing to do because it allows a veterinarian to assess the roots of the teeth as well as the tooth itself looking for decay, resorption and other abnormalities."

Dental health can also be genetic. Some pets are prone to quick tooth decay and the production of teeth staining and tartar.

Ancient Dog Skull Found Proves: Man's Had a Best Friend For Thousands of Years!

Apparently, Dog’s been man’s best friend a longer than we thought.

“An ancient dog skull found in Siberia and dating back 33,000 years presents some of the oldest known evidence of dog domestication,” reports Fox News.

When compared with a similar find in Belgium, the two skulls indicate that the “domestication of dogs by humans occurred repeatedly throughout early human history at different geographic locations – rather than at a single domestication event, as previously believed,” (FoxNews).

Because the Altai Mountain skull was extraordinarily well persevered all these years, scientist have been able to make multiple measurements of the skull, teeth and mandibles that might not be possible on less well-preserved remains.

Greg Hodgins, a researcher at the University of Arizona’s Accelerator Mass Spectrometry Laboratory and co-author of a study reporting the find said “essentially, wolves have long snouts and their teeth are not crowded, and domestication results in this shortening of the snout and widening of the jaws and crowding of the teeth.”

Hodgins also said “the interesting thing is that typically we think of domestication as being cows, sheep and goats, things that product food through meat or secondary agricultural products such as milk, cheese and wool and things like that…. Those are different relationships than humans may have with dogs. The dogs are not necessarily providing products or meat. They are probably providing protection, companionship and perhaps helping on the hunt.”

This finding shows just how far back our special relationship with our canine companions goes, which appears to be the first out of all human relationships with animals.

Nutrition and Oral Heath for Dogs & Cats

In case you don’t know, February is National Pet Dental Health Month! Traditionally, we've thought of dental disease as a problem with older pets, but recent data indicates that 80% of dogs begin showing signs of dental problems by age 3 ad 70% of felines over 20 months of age have some degree of dental disease! The signs of dental disease can vary but may involve gingivitis (painful and inflamed gums), bad breath, and difficulty eating. These signs can progress to gum recession and eventually tooth loss. While this can affect any dog, small breed dogs are especially susceptible to this problem. The effects of dental disease are not limited to the mouth. Other organs such as liver, kidneys, heart, or joints may be affected by problems that start in the mouth.

At the heart of dental disease are millions of bacteria. These bacteria thrive in our mouths, as well as our pet’s mouths. Bacteria, along with food particles and mouth cells, form a sticky film on the teeth and under the gum line called dental plaque. This film is what we feel on our teeth after we drink a glass of orange juice or eat a creamy pasta dinner. Of course, people brush their own teeth every day and rinse their mouths with many special products to help remove this dental plaque. Most dogs and cats do not receive this same attention to oral care, which may result in poor oral hygiene, starting with bad breath, also known as halitosis.

Dental plaque does more than just cause bad breath. The bacteria that cause halitosis are living organisms. Not only do they feed and multiply, they produce waste products and toxins which are irritating to the gums, resulting in gingivitis.

Because the mouth and gums have a good blood supply, the pathogenic bacteria have the perfect window of opportunity to "hop" a ride into the blood stream, eventually causing bacterial infection of the heart valves, the kidneys, and even the joints.

It's much easier and more effective to prevent dental disease than to treat it once it has progressed. Brushing the teeth and routine veterinary evaluations and cleaning (requiring general anesthesia to enable ultrasonic scaling of all surfaces of the teeth) are an essential part of preventing dental disease, but we can also offer a nutritional solution.

Believe it or not, the kind of food we feed our pets can make a major beneficial impact on dental health, where brushing often falls short. Cancer Is The Leading Cause of Death in Older Dogs

Did you know that the number one natural cause of death in older pets is cancer?

Dogs are twice as likely as humans to develop leukemia, four times more likely to suffer from breast cancer, eight times more likely to develop bone cancer, and an incredible 35 times more at risk for skin cancer.

About six million dogs are diagnosed with cancer each year in the United States according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Dogs have 35 times as much skin cancer as do humans, 4 times as many breast tumors, 8 times as much bone cancer, and twice as high an incidence of leukemia. Cancer is the number one killer of dogs over the age of two.

How can you detect cancer early enough to treat it?

1. Change of bowel or bladder habits: Diarrhea or constipation, straining to urinate or defecate, blood or mucous in the stool or urine.

2. A sore that does not heal: Some skin cancers don't appear as lumps, but as raw, bleeding or scabby areas.

3. Unusual bleeding or discharge: Bleeding from the mouth, ears, or nose may signal a tumor inside.

4. Drooling or difficulty swallowing: Very common with tumors in the mouth or throat.

5. Changes in respiration: Nagging cough, hoarseness, tiring easily, rapid breathing or excessive panting, all are signs of heart and lung disease.

There's no question that pets are good for our health, helping to do everything from lower blood pressure to lessen symptoms of anxiety and depression. One recent study from the American Psychological Association even found that just thinking about a cherished animal improved the emotional well-being of a pet owner just as much as thinking about a cherished friend did.

Here are five ways to make a workout more fun for you and your pet:

Morning Walk

A brisk daily walk can do wonders for your immune system, cardiovascular health and weight management, but it can be hard to find the motivation to get moving each morning. Use your dog's unflagging energy and need to get outdoors as motivation to move quickly from your house to the park.

A recent Michigan State University study found that people who owned and walked dogswere 34 percent more likely to get the amount of daily exercise they need, according to a university release.

"The findings suggest public health campaigns that promote the responsible ownership of a dog along with the promotion of dog walking may represent a logical opportunity to increase physical activity," epidemiologist and study author Matthew Reeves said in a statement.

Agility Training

This organized, competitive sport, in which dogs are judged on speed and agility as they complete obstacle courses, is also a good workout for the trainer. In order to usher your pet through a new routine, you'll have to run alongside offering command words and treats for a job well done. Your dog will improve strength and coordination while you both get a cardiovascular workout.

Doga

Dog yoga, or doga, is a type of Hatha practice that incorporates massage, stretching and relaxation for both pet and pet owner. Many yoga enthusiasts dismiss the practice, but practitioners of doga say that a class can help them de-stress and feel connected to their pups.

Skijor

Skijor is an amalgam of cross-country skiing and mushing, in which a person cross-country skis with a dog harnessed to him. The team effort -- the dog pulls forward while the person uses skis and polls to keep momentum going -- results in great distance and speed.

Five Pet Toxins That Require Immediate Treatment

Chocolate: Most people know not to give chocolate to their pets.

Animals metabolize theobromine, the toxic principle in chocolate, differently from the way humans do. Theobromine acts as a caffeine-like stimulant in dogs. To make matters worse, chocolate also contains caffeine and fat.

Most humans will stop drinking caffeine when they get a little jittery, but dogs do not seem to have an "off" switch when it comes to things they shouldn't eat, especially if there is fat involved.

The toxic substances in chocolate can act as a metabolic time bomb in your pet.

Initially, they just may seem a little hyper, but this can rapidly progress to vomiting, diarrhea, a dangerously rapid heart rate, seizures and death if sufficient amounts of chocolate are ingested and the dog is not treated appropriately.

Depending on how much your pet weighs and how much and what type of chocolate (white chocolate usually not toxic and only a problem with the fat content), milk chocolate, semisweet chocolate, dark chocolate, cocoa powder, cocoa hulls, home treatment may be possible.

Your pet's veterinarian will need to know your pet's accurate weight in pounds or kilograms and an accurate weight in ounces of how much chocolate or cocoa powder your pet ingested to make a good recommendation on treatment.

The toxic substances in chocolate can stay in your pet's body for several days, so depending on the amount ingested and your pet's response, the hospital stay may be a few days.

Rat poison: There are several different types of rat poisons that have different ingredients.

If you suspect your pet has eaten rodenticide, it is absolutely VITAL that you tell your pet's veterinarian the active ingredient in the particular rat poison. The treatments for the various classes are completely different.

The most common rat poisons cause uncontrolled bleeding if ingested.

If caught early enough, these "anticoagulant" rat poisons actually have an antidote in the form of vitamin K. Unfortunately, it is not a form of vitamin K that you can buy over the counter. The form available over the counter WILL NOT WORK. Additionally, vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin and therefore can be overdosed if you're just "winging it" at home.
If not caught early enough, your pet may need a lengthy hospital stay and require plasma or whole-blood transfusions.

Other types of rat poisons cause seizures until the animal dies, or act as a massive overdose of vitamin D (another fat-soluble vitamin), which causes kidney failure.
Unfortunately, some rodenticide companies are making products that contain more than one of these types of poisons. They are effective against rats and other mammals but much more challenging to treat.

Slug bait: In the spring when people start to garden, we see a rapid increase in slug-bait poisoning. This one is particularly heartbreaking to witness.

It is so very preventable.

Slug baits that contain the chemical metaldehyde cause severe seizures in pets. The pet, if untreated, usually dies of the seizures or associated high body temperatures, which can reach 107F or more.

If you notice these symptoms in your pet or find that your pet has eaten this product, do not "wait and see." Your pet will need to be hospitalized and treated aggressively if you wait until the seizures start.

I have had clients report that the seizures started within 30 minutes of ingestion and others claim that it was 24 hours before they noticed the seizures.

Avoidance is the best way to treat this poisoning. There are "safer" slug baits available that contain iron phosphate. They are slightly more expensive than the ones containing metaldehyde, but not when you compare this with the monetary cost of treatment and the emotional cost of seeing your pet seize uncontrollably.

I enjoy gardening and only use the slug bait containing iron phosphate. My pets do initially seem interested because the little pellets rattle in the container like dog or cat food, but once it comes out, they smell it and give me a look that says, "Oh, it's this uninteresting stuff again," and they leave it alone -- even Dexter, our lab.

Marijuana: When we see a dog come in with dilated pupils, staggering and dribbling urine, one of our first thoughts is marijuana.

Many parents have learned of their kids' or even spouses' drug problems when the dog gets into the hidden marijuana.

One of our big battles with this is people not wanting to admit what their pet got into. Just tell your vet so he or she can administer the correct treatment.

This toxin is treated with the standard decontamination and supportive care. We try to make the pet vomit (difficult at times because the active ingredient in marijuana has anti-nausea properties), administer activated charcoal and hospitalize on IV fluids until the symptoms improve.

Death from marijuana ingestion is statistically rare but possible. The severity increases dramatically when the dog eats an entire pan of brownies containing marijuana. (Remember, marijuana is an appetite stimulant.)

The reason it is SO important to know if there is a possibility that your pet has been exposed to marijuana is that some of the symptoms resemble those from our next toxin.

Antifreeze: Sweet-tasting antifreeze contains ethylene glycol, which is converted into another substance in the body that shuts down the kidneys. If untreated, even a lick or two can result in a miserable death that isn't very quick.

This is another toxin that you don't want to "wait and see" on. If you wait for symptoms to occur, you have waited too long and death is likely.

Your pet will need to be hospitalized and put on IV fluids. If this is caught early enough, there are two antidotes. Of course, the more expensive one works the best.

Recently, some specialty hospitals in our area have been using hemodialysis on these patients, and more pets are surviving this poison.

Even without dialysis, treatment for antifreeze poisoning is expensive. You can expect to spend $1,000 to $2,000, depending on the size of your pet and the length of the hospital stay.

The important thing to remember with ALL of these toxins is that your pet will NOT learn to avoid the toxin in the future if they are exposed once. They will ingest these poisons again and again. WE are the ones who need to learn and keep these and all toxins out of reach of our pets.

How Fast Do Dogs Really Age When Compared With Humans?

A couple of weeks before Christmas, the world’s oldest dog died in Japan. Pusuke was reported to be 26 years and nine months old. Twenty-six years is really an achievement, because only about 8% of dogs live past the age of 15. If you do the math and one calendar year equals seven dog years, that made Pusuke 182 years old by human standards.

Can a dog really be 182 years old?

The relationship between chronological and physiological age in dogs is not linear. Young dogs age rapidly at first and then the rate of aging slows down in middle age before increasing again in geriatric dogs. For example, a Miniature Poodle at one year of age is about 11 human years old; at seven years, it is middle aged at 42 human years, and 14 years old is 67 human years. Great Danes, who have a shorter lifespan than Miniature Poodles, at one year of age are 27 human years, at seven years are 59 human years and by 14 years are 98 human years.

Which dogs live the longest?

Longevity in dogs depends on multiple factors. Two important ones are breed and body weight. Owners of small dogs will be happy to learn that the smaller the dog, the longer they live. This inverse relationship of body weight and longevity is one of the unique features of dogs since the converse is true for other mammals. Take for instance the largest mammal in the world, the blue whale, which has a lifespan of 85 years, but the 1.8 gram Etruscan shrew has a lifespan of only three years.

Your dog’s breed will also affect her longevity. Overall, a mutt lives longer than a purebred dog with three notable exceptions. Miniature Poodles, Jack Russell Terriers and Whippets have been identified as purebred dogs with average lifespans longer than the average mutt. Breed also affects the diseases your purebred dog is prone to developing and will dictate some of the healthcare decisions you will make on behalf of your pet.

What about cats?

There is less information about how cat age relates to human age. A study of longevity in Swedish cats enrolled in an insurance program found 68% of Birman cats were still alive at 12.5 years of age. Swedish Siamese cats did not fare as well with only 42% alive at 12.5 years of age.

Why Do Cat's Urinate Outside of the Litter Box?

There are two main reasons that cats go outside the litter box. The first is stress, which often causes them to mark areas around the house out of a feeling of insecurity. The second is the box itself, which they either have an aversion to or prefer to replace with a more convenient or luxurious location. To address the issue, make the litter box desirable while making out-of-bounds areas inconvenient.

First, clean up accidents with an enzymatic cleaner (such as Anti-Icky-Poo) and make the taboo locations off-limits.

Second, after your veterinarian has examined your kitty to make sure she doesn't have any illness that's causing stress, painful urination or difficulty getting into the box, work on making the litter box desirable.

The number of litter boxes in your household should equal the number of cats plus one, and the boxes should be 1 1/2 times the length of the cat. They should be in a convenient location, at least 4 inches deep, and cleaned every time the cat is ready to enter. That means scooping each box twice daily.

Next, do a choice test to determine your cat's preferences. To do this, you need four boxes lined up side by side in the kitty's room. The boxes should be nearly identical, but with one thing different about each. For instance, one may have a scoopable litter, the second the same litter but scented, and the third and fourth boxes may mirror the same litters as boxes one and two, but be significantly larger.

The Importance of Understanding Canine Influenza

Canine influenza is a highly contagious respiratory infection of dogs that is caused by a virus. The canine influenza virus is closely related to the virus that causes equine influenza and it is thought that the equine influenza virus mutated to produce the canine influenza virus.

Two clinical syndromes have been seen in dogs infected with the canine influenza virus, a mild form of the disease and a more severe form that is accompanied by pneumonia.

About the mild form—Dogs suffering with the mild form of canine influenza develop a soft, moist cough that persists for 10 to 30 days. Some dogs have a dry cough similar to the "kennel cough" caused by Bordetella bronchiseptica/parainfluenza virus complex. For this reason, canine influenza virus infections are frequently mistaken for "kennel cough." Dogs with the mild form of influenza may also have a thick nasal discharge, which is usually caused by a secondary bacterial infection.

About the severe form—Dogs with the severe form of canine influenza develop high fevers (104ºF to 106ºF) and have clinical signs of pneumonia, such as increased respiratory rates and effort. Pneumonia may be due to a secondary bacterial infection.

Because this is a newly emerging disease, almost all dogs, regardless of breed or age, are susceptible to infection and have no immunity. Virtually all dogs that are exposed to the virus become infected and nearly 80% show clinical signs of disease. Fortunately, most affected dogs have the mild form.

Fatal cases of pneumonia resulting from infection with canine influenza virus have been reported in dogs, but the fatality rate (5% to 8%) has been low so far.

The first recognized outbreak of canine influenza in the world is believed to have occurred in racing greyhounds in January 2004 at a track in Florida. From June to August of 2004, outbreaks of respiratory disease were reported at 14 tracks in 6 states (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Kansas, Texas, and West Virginia). Between January and May of 2005, outbreaks occurred at 20 tracks in 11 states (Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Texas, West Virginia, and Wisconsin). Infection has also been confirmed in pet dogs in California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington State, and Washington, DC. These cases occurred in animal shelters, humane societies, rescue groups, pet stores, boarding kennels, and veterinary clinics.

As with any disease caused by a virus, treatment is largely supportive. Good animal care practices and nutrition assist dogs in mounting an effective immune response. In the milder form of the disease, a thick green nasal discharge, which most likely represents a secondary bacterial infection, usually resolves quickly after treatment with a broad-spectrum bactericidal antimicrobial. In the more severe form of the disease, pneumonia is thought to often be caused by bacterial superinfection, and responds best to hydration (sometimes via intravenous administration of fluids) and a broad-spectrum bactericidal antimicrobial.

Canine influenza is not known to be transmissible from dogs to people. However, caretakers can inadvertently transmit canine influenza virus from infected dogs to susceptible dogs by not following good hygiene and infection control practices. To prevent spread of canine influenza virus, caretakers should take the following precautions:

Wash hands with soap and water (if soap and water are unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand cleaner)
1. Before and after handling each animal
2. After coming into contact with animal saliva, urine, feces or blood
3. After cleaning cages
4. Before eating meals, taking breaks, smoking or leaving the facility
5. Before and after using the restroom
Wear a barrier gown over your clothes and wear gloves when handling sick animals or cleaning cages. Discard gown and gloves before working with other animals
Consider use of goggles or face protection if splashes from contaminated surfaces may occur
Bring a change of clothes to wear home at the end of the day
Thoroughly clean clothes worn at the animal facility
Do not allow animals to "kiss" you or lick your face
Do not eat in the animal care area
Separate newly arriving animals from animals that have been housed one week or longer.
Routinely monitor animals for signs of illness. Separate sick animals from healthy animals, especially animals with signs of respiratory disease.
There is no evidence of transmission of canine influenza virus from dogs to people. However, because of concerns about diseases that are transmissible from dogs to people, in general, it may be prudent for young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and immunocompromised persons to limit or avoid contact with animals that are ill.

A few years back at the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society, a family adopted a new born puppy as a Christmas gift for their elderly mother.

She wanted a small dog, so as a joke, her adult children chose the notoriously big breed because it was young and small, said shelter spokeswoman Gretchen Fieser. Soon after, the dog came back.

"It wasn't funny," Fieser said. "People get a pet for someone else, which we discourage, and then the pet comes back to us."

Unfortunately, it's a strange but common occurrence this time of year at the North Side shelter. People purchase pets on impulse, often as gifts, right before Christmas and return them when they come to the realization that they're not prepared to care for the animals.

"We try to encourage people to really think before they adopt," Fieser said.

At the Humane Society, staff handle so many strays and surrenders that they cannot be so selective, Fieser said. In one weekend last month, people surrendered 132 pets. About 14,000 animals, dogs, cats, rabbits, chickens, reptiles and a duck went through the doors last year at the shelter's two locations.

Surrendered pets suffer emotionally when they return to shelter cages, but they can adapt to new homes, Fieser stated.

Before purchasing a pet, be sure to plan for the adoption properly. You must start by buying food, dog bowls, toys, shampoo and bedding in advance.

FDA Reports 353 Illnesses Tied To Imported Chicken Jerky Products

Recent reports of illnesses in dogs given chicken jerky treats have increased rapidly following a new government warning regarding pet snacks made in China.

The federal Food and Drug Administration has recorded at least 353 reports this year of illnesses related to imported chicken jerky products, also sold as chicken tenders, chicken strips or chicken treats, a spokeswoman said.

Dog owners and veterinarians are reporting that animals have been troubled with a range of symptoms within hours or days of eating chicken jerky, including life threatening problems such as kidney failure and Fanconi syndrome, a condition marked by low blood sugar.

Though the illnesses seem to be tied to chicken jerky products manufactured in China, the source of the problem remains a mystery, said Siobhan DeLancey, an FDA spokeswoman. Despite extensive chemical and microbiological testing, the agency has not identified problems with a specific contaminant, or a specific brand or type of treat she stated.

“We're still digging through the reports to see if we can discern a common thread that’s more specific than just chicken jerky,” DeLancey said.

The latest warning was the agency’s 3rd alert regarding chicken jerky treats, with previous cautions issued in 2007 and 2008. In 2007, 156 reports of dog illnesses tied to chicken jerky were logged, but the number fell sharply, to just 41 in 2008, according to FDA records.

Because the agency has not identified any particular products as the culprit, no recalls have been issued.

In the meantime, FDA officials are warning pet owners to avoid chicken jerky treats imported from China. They’re also urging owners to seek medical care if dogs develop symptoms including decreased appetite, decreased activity, vomiting, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, increased water consumption and increased urination. Stop feeding the treats to the animal and seek veterinary care, especially if symptoms are severe, or persist for more than a day, officials say.

Weighing Raw VS. Commercial Pet Food

Take a stroll down the pet food aisle of your favorite store and your eyes will take in every imaginable color, a few cartoon characters and a lot of incredible claims. More than 3,000 brands of pet food fill the aisles and pet owners will spend about $18 billion to feed their pets each and every year.

But, high profile recalls, sick pets and corporate mistrust have moved a small number of pet owners to consider making their pets' food at home, instead of buying it in a bag. An Internet search for "raw diets" brings up almost 3 million different results, many of which claim this sort of food is nutritionally superior to the commercially-prepared diets. Adding more fuel to the fire, advocates of homemade foods persist in claims that commercial diets, especially those with a high percentage of grain, are actually shortening the life span of our animals.

How many of these arguments are valid and which ones lack evidence? First, it is important to understand that all of the reports of increased energy and healthier pets are simply observations by the owners. Actual scientific evidence supporting these claims is non-existent. Another claim that is used by raw food advocates is that dogs and cats can't digest grains, especially the corn and wheat ingredients found in many commercial diets. But evidence shows dogs use these cooked grains as effectively as other carbohydrate sources.

Perhaps the biggest reason many pet owners opt for preparing their pets' meals is a mistrust of the corporations formulating the dry foods. Although recalls have happened occasionally and pets have become sick, the reality of the situation is that the vast majority of commercial diets are not only safe, they also provide an optimum level of nutrition, helping out pets live full and healthy lives.

So, is one type of diet actually better than another?

The answer to that question is complex and should always involve a discussion with your veterinarian. Raw diets, for all their purported benefits, do come with significant risks. If you do choose to use a homemade or raw diet, talk with your veterinarian and use an approved veterinary nutritional site, like BalanceIt.com. Many raw diets run the risk of salmonella or E. coli infection much like undercooked meat does for humans. Also, remember that many pet food companies have decades of experience, research and testing, proving the effectiveness and safety of their diets.

2011 Animal of the Year Has Been Announced

We're frequently told that a dog is man's best friend, but not if that man happened to be Osama bin Laden.

One of the most overlooked stories of 2011 is the remarkable operation carried out by the American commando team (SEAL Team Six). Seal Team Six went to Pakistan and killed the al-Qaeda leader in the early hours of May 2 2011. The biggest role of this operation was played by the only member on four legs.

Wearing canine armor, the trained military dog, believed to be either a German shepherd or a Belgian Malinois, was attached to a human SEAL and lowered from a helicopter into the compound in Abbottabad. He had the ability to sniff out hidden explosives and find any secret rooms of bin Laden's. And if any of the bad guys had tried to escape, the dog could have easily given chase, seeing as a shepherd or a Malinois runs twice as quickly as humans.

If the dog ever needs a reference, it doesn't get much better than having the following remark on your résumé, courtesy of General David Petraeus, then commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan (he's also said the military needs more dogs): "The capability they bring to the fight cannot be replicated by man or machine."

Some Holiday Plants Can Be Toxic To Pets

The holiday season is amongst us once again. Decorating for the holidays most always includes using plants and flowers to beautify our environment.

There are many plants and flowers that are toxic to pets but only a few of the most popular holiday plants will be discussed here. It is important to know what parts of the plant or flower are toxic and what symptoms your pet may experience.

• Holly is used in making wreaths or decorating mantles. It is the berries that are toxic. The severity of the symptoms usually correlates with how many berries are eaten. The symptoms seen after ingestion are vomiting, diarrhea, and depression.

• Mistletoe is customarily hung in doorways so that when two people are under the mistletoe at the same time they are obliged to kiss. The berries are toxic but some sources say that the leaves and stem are more toxic than the berries. Either way, it is important to make sure that these are not ingested. This plant can cause significant vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, decreased heart rate, erratic behavior, sudden collapse and even death.

• Amaryllis (with red or red and white flowers) is very popular during the holiday season. It is the flower that is most toxic. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, depressed appetite, excessive salivation, tremors, and sometimes abdominal pain.

• Poinsettia is probably the most frequently seen holiday plant. It is the sap from the leaves (not the flower) that can be irritating if ingested. If enough is eaten it can cause vomiting but it is basically non-toxic.

• Christmas cactus only blooms around Christmas time and is generally used for center pieces. This plant is mainly toxic only in large quantities. Vomiting and diarrhea sometimes with blood and depression are the typical symptoms.

• Christmas rose is a plant with a white flower. The entire plant is toxic. The most commonly seen symptoms are diarrhea with blood, abdominal pain, vomiting, and delirium.

• Jerusalem cherry is a plant that has orange and red berries and is typically used as a centerpiece. These berries are extremely toxic especially in the green and yellow states. Ingestion results in vomiting, diarrhea, depression, mouth ulcers, shock, and even death.

Fructosamine Is A Useful Tool In Managing Pet's Diabetes

Fructosamine is formed in dogs’ and cats’ (and people’s) livers by combining the protein albumin with a molecule of glucose. Fructosamine is formed in proportion to glucose levels: pets with unregulated diabetes mellitus have high glucose levels and thus have high fructosamine levels.

Fructosamine production doesn’t fluctuate with minute-to-minute blood sugar levels; rather, it reflects a glucose-level average for the preceding two to three weeks.

Hemoglobin A1C, also called glycated hemoglobin or glycosylated hemoglobin or HbA1c, is used in humans to determine diabetes regulation, and test results reflect the quality of glucose control for a two- to three-month time period.

Hemoglobin A1C is not used in veterinary medicine because HbA1c test results correlate poorly with dog and cat diabetes management.

Conversely, fructosamine is useful in people in certain circumstances (acute bleeding and hemodialysis patients) but is not used as a first-line tool.

Fructosamine measurement in healthy, non-diabetic dogs and cats, as well as pets under good control of their diabetes, should be between 142 and 450. It is reported in micromoles per liter of serum.

Please note that these numbers reflect glucose control, but not glucose level. In other words, normal blood glucose should be between 64 and 170 and is reported as milligrams per deciliter of serum. Be careful to keep these terms straight when discussing diabetes control with your pet’s doctor.

Fructosamine is measured by obtaining a blood sample from your pet. Serum is extracted from the sample, and submitted to a laboratory. Results are available in one to two days.

Fructosamine alone is not sufficient to regulate a diabetic dog or cat. It is, however, an excellent tool to determine whether the dosage of insulin is correct, along with the glucose curve. HbA1c in people, and fructosamine in both people and pets, are both designed to be a proportional proxy for a patient’s glucose averages. Unfortunately, there is information on the Internet that disparages the value of fructosamine in pets.
