Orangutans at the National Zoo Have a New Toy to Play With! iPads!

A couple of apes at the National Zoo have an expensive new toy to play with, iPads! Orangutans at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo are now using apps on iPads to keep busy throughout their day!

The orangutans are using 10 different apps that include drawing activities, cognitive games and apps that use virtual musical instruments! “Apps for Apes” is a conservation Orangutan Outreach program which helped provide the apes with iPads.

Currently, there are only a few tens of thousands orangutans left in the wild. They are mostly found in the Sumatran rain forest and the Borneo rain forest, in which they are both endangered.

Help Find Homes for Sandy Pets!

Superstorm Sandy created havoc on much of New York and New Jersey in late October.  This devastating storm left many homeless and forced people and pets into shelters.  Many animals were separated from their families and still are waiting to be reunited or in need of a new home.

Many residents from towns like Long Beach, Oceanside and Island Park are still without homes and don’t have a place to bring their pets home to. A shelter volunteer, Tracy Rahvers, told WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs “Not only are they paying a monthly mortgage, now they have to find a place where they have to pay rent.  So, now they have that and they’re still trying to figure out how they’re going to have the means to take care of themselves and/or children and also their pet.”

The Bregman Vet group would like to help get the word out about these animals that are in need of a home! We encourage anyone interested in fostering one of these pets in need, more than 100 of them, to contact Nassau Emergency Pet Shelter at 516-272-0017 or emergencypetshelter@gmail.com.  You can also visit the Mitchell Field Gymnasium on Miller Avenue in Garden City!

Winter Exercises for your Pets!

During the winter months, it can be difficult to find motivation for you and your pet to get outside and exercise.

Typically smaller breeds with short hair require some additional cozy apparel to stay warm outdoors.  With a few simple tricks and the right apparel, you can train your pet to be much more enthusiastic about playing outdoors in the cold weather!
Try enticing your pet with off-leash exercise, to encourage more aerobic activity, which helps them stay warm.  Walking your pet in wooded areas can protect them from the wind and introduces them to rich smells, sounds and sites that may distract them from the cold weather.

When winter brings snow, it can be harsh on the paws of your dog because of de-icers that contain chemicals.  A simple solution is canine booties, also “Musher’s Secret” which is a waxy substance that you can apply to their paws for protection.  When exercising outdoors with your furry companion make sure they have access to shelter and water at all times.  You can also try some indoor activities like tug of war with your dog, which involves physical exertion that can keep them in shape.  Winter is also a great time to enroll your pet in indoor training classes.   These are a few good ways to improve the behavior and obedience of your pet in a heated facility that is comfortable for the both of you!

The Bregman Vet Group encourages you to maintain your pet’s health, even in the winter season!  Try and enjoy some exercise together, and be sure to visit your veterinarian regularly throughout the cold winter months!

How To Keep Pets Safe from Cold Winter Weather!

With winter being well underway, pet owners need to be aware of low temperatures and the safety of their pets!

When contemplating keeping your pets outside, the general rule of thumb is if it’s too cold for you outside, then it’s also too cold for your pets.  Some pets are affected more than others when it comes to the low temperatures.

Susan Nelson, a clinical associate professor and veterinarian at the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Pet Health Center offered some insight on pet size and cool temperatures.
“Small stature and short coats, such as with a Chihuahua, make dogs less tolerant of cold weather. Some of these dogs may not even tolerate cooler temperatures that are still above freezing for very long.”

Nelson added, “Larger body mass and longer, plusher coats allow dogs to tolerate lower temperatures for a longer duration – think Siberian husky.”

This winter, be sure to keep a close eye on your furry friends and keep them safe from cold winter weather! Do you have any tips that help you to keep your pets safe and warm? Let us know on our Facebook page, linked HERE

New Year’s Resolutions to Help Your Pet!

As we all know the New Year has just rolled in! Many of us like to reflect on the year and make resolutions to improve ourselves for the upcoming year!

These resolutions can include eating healthier, going to the gym more often,  or anything that may better ourselves!  However, this year, you may want to include your pets in tour New Year’s resolutions!

Pets age much more quickly than humans, so it is important to make at least one visit to the veterinarian every year for pets under 7 years of age and at least twice for older pets.  With accelerated aging it causes their bodies to change very quickly over time, and if you wait until they are displaying signs of illness it could be too late.  After a full examination by the veterinarian they might suggest dental cleaning, lab work, vaccinations, nutritional supplements, weight loss or even medications to improve your pet's health.  It is also important to evaluate your pet’s diet.

There are many different choices on the shelves that it is vital to do some research before choosing a brand that may not be optimal for your specific pet.  You should also be aware the sudden changes in a pet’s diet can be more harmful than helpful, be sure to do it slowly over a period of around 2 weeks.  Like humans obesity in pets is at an all-time high, with 60 percent of household pets being overweight or obese in America.

Also like humans, obesity can expose them to a variety of disease conditions.  Consult your vet and develop a healthy diet and exercise program for your pet.

Combine all of these and have a happy and healthy New Year for you and your pets!
